Michel and Max Havelaar – successful engagement for fair trade
Michel Orange Premium Fair Trade, Michel Bodyguard Fair Trade and Michel Orange Passion Fair Trade: these popular products of ours have been Max Havelaar-certified since 2007.
The orange juice from cooperatives in Brazil and Cuba is bought at guaranteed fair prices, which provides for stable trading conditions. Fair trade improves the living and working conditions of the peasant farmers and pickers and monitors the environmental impact of the local production chain.
The producers invest the surpluses resulting from the fair trade in education and training, health care and day-care facilities for children. Alternatively, the workers borrow the money in the form of credits to buy land for themselves. In 2010 the sale of Max Havelaar-certified Michel products produced a surplus of more than CHF 67,000 for the producers in Brazil and Cuba.
